The dental industry recommend that adults and children visit their local dentist at least once a year, or twice if the individual is keen to really stay on top of their oral hygiene. As conditions relating to the mouth can take up to six months to develop fully, twice a year visits can be a good way to keep on top of any issues that may arise. For those that prefer infrequent visits – one time a year will typically be sufficient.
What risks are involved with a failure to visit dentists consistently?
The human mouth is exposed to a variety of chemicals on a daily basis; from those that are deemed necessary for the health of our teeth (such as fluoride), all the way to the types found within modern foods and preservatives. As time goes by these chemicals can take a toll on gums and enamel, and if left untreated, bacteria can soon start to form.
The amount of time that it takes for these conditions will depend on the level of exposure to the bacteria-causing chemicals; this is why many recommend visits every six months. In all fairness, the frequency of visits is something that the person in question will need to decide on. If they suffer with sensitive teeth, or if they’ve noticed plaque building up and other related issues, then a visit twice a year can certainly help.
If there aren’t any noticeable concerns it’s still worth going to the dentist, but once a year can be more than sufficient. In prolonged cases, once every couple of years should be the maximum amount of time allowed – as there are numerous conditions that can be all but invisible to the naked eye. These can lead to other more severe problems in the future.
For example: oral cancer will have very few symptoms early on, before taking on the traits of an infection and then spreading to lymph nodes in and around the throat. Leaving this illness too long can be fatal, but it can still be treated – especially if detected before the cells are able to spread beyond reasonable control. Frequent visits can help to spot conditions of all calibres and this is why experts recommend them as often as they do.
